Socks in progress

Just a quick sock progress post here, to get in on time for the Summer of Socks weekly report.

I still have M's socks in progress, and they've finally rounded the corner, er, heel:

Quick stats:
- Basic 4x2 rib started at 92 stitches, decreased down leg to 76.
- Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Baltic Sea
- US1 needles

And on Ravelry, there's a new sock-a-long challenge called Ravelry: Sockdown that started yesterday. This month's challenge is either a Sockbug pattern or a lace pattern. I went with both, choosing a lace pattern from Sockbug, the River Rapids socks (link is a PDF). It's written for sport weight yarn and I only have fingering, but I figure that's no problem. It would come out huge at the gauge they state anyway, so I've started them at 64 stitches per the pattern but with the smaller yarn. The colors, however, I'm not so sure of:

In the skein, I somehow expected this colorway (Cherry Tree Hill in Foxy Lady) to be much more subtle than it is. It's got this bright red that really screams, especially when it stacks with the same color in the previous row. I've only got the ribbing done and will give it at least a repeat of the pattern to redeem itself, but as it is now, I'm skeptical. The pattern really should be done in something more solid-ish, but I already have patterns planned for the solid sock yarns I have. I might just have to use one of them anyway and go and get different solid yarn for the intended patterns. I hope to get some knitting on this done tonight to see how it goes.

I think I'm going to have to make some River Rapids socks soon! That pattern is so cute and looks fairly easy for lace. I used CTH Foxy Lady for a pair of monkeys for my sock swap partner. If you go to the photo album on my blog, the socks are on the second row on the right. I had a lot of trouble with pooling and even tried alternating balls every two rows...it still pooled some and was a total pain! I thought the colors were very nice though. I hope you have better luck with it!

I like both a lot. And how could one possibly dislike a colorway called Foxy Lady?

Thanks for the link. Nice pattern!

lisa:

M's sock is looking good, and the calf shaping is lovely!

The SIPs are great! Pretty colorways!

I made some River Run socks last year and absolutely adore them. Mine were in fingering weight-yarn, too, and fit perfectly fine.

I love that colorway of LL! It looks like you found your "magic number" to make the colors turn out nicely, too.
