No photos for today, but wanted to get a post in anyway...
This week I was working along on Icarus, and suddenly there was an unholy mess of yarn barf and tangle coming out of the middle of my ball. I looked down at it and thought to myself. "Hm. It's coming out of the middle. Somewhere in my knitty travels I remember someone saying not to knit lace from the center, because the ball will collapse and get tangled." Damn.
Three hours of spreading out tangles over my legs and carefully trying to find the problem loops, I did manage to get it untangled without having to resort to the scissors. I then rewound the ball so that my partial Icarus is now coming off of the outside of the ball. Whew! I also remembered seeing somewhere to put a toilet paper tube in the middle, to help keep it from collapsing even more, so I did that as well, for good measure.
Because I DEFINITELY do not want to do that again!
Alas, at least it's a mistake that I'll only make once! (I hope.)
In other news, I'm knitting my first sock using magic loop--Dublin Bay (PDF) in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock. I'm hoping it's not coming out too big. I was trucking along past the heel on sock one when I saw this post by Grumperina which she states that she knit socks for her dad in LL on size 0s and 60 stitches! Uh, I'm using size 1 needles and have 72 stitches. Unless Grumperina's dad has extrordanarily small feet, I may be ripping. I did calculate my gauge, but now I'm having serious doubts. I'm having no trouble with the magic loop, though, so that's good. I'm using Addi Turbos, size 1 and 47". I know that's probably excessively long, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't too fiddly.
Oh, and there was a story about knitting on Marketplace on NPR this afternoon! It was by Cash Peters, who is funny and irreverant, so it was a humorous look at a knit night in LA.
All for now!

I use about 60-72 sts on US1s for socks, so you sound to be on track with that. And as for the lace - there is no untangling of lace yarn - you have to be on top of it!

I didn't know that about lace yarn! I haven't knit lace since I bought my ball winder, and now I know not to start in the middle. Thanks for the warning, and I'm so glad you managed to untangle your yarn before something terminal happened to it.
I just finished my first socks using ML and loved it. Wasn't so sure at first, but then, it got easier. A 40" cable works wonderfully. Not sure about anything shorter, haven't tried it yet.
