Lilly asked in a comment:
Your knitting's terrific - but what on earth is a panta?? The pictures on the link were passworded. That they're nice gifts is what intrigues me. Thanks much.
Sorry about that! It had been a while since I read that thread and printed out my pattern, so I didn't notice that the photos from the front page were gone.
"Panta" means headband in Finnish, and I got the pattern from this Craftster thread. Apparently the pattern came via Brazil, but later in the thread it was found to be a translation of a Drops pattern.
It's a wide headband, good for people who wear their hair up a lot so don't like hats, but want their ears and head to keep warm. It's in the same vein as Knitty's recent Calorimetry, it's just knitted in the other direction. I tried both, and I liked the Panta better, but that's just one knitter's opinion. To knit, I find it much easier to adjust for different yarns and sizes. You can just start knitting, because you don't need to know your gauge before casting on. Cast on, knit for a couple of inches, increase, knit a few more increases, repeat to the halfway point, and decrease it back down. Graft the bottom. I did these for a 5yo girl, a 9yo, and their mom, all in extremely different yarns and needle sizes. I just adjusted the number of ribs depending on what would work out best for the number of stitches casted on. Hope that makes sense!
An English translation of the original pattern is found on page 4 of the Craftster thread, here. There's another slightly modified version on page 38, and that's the one that I based mine on. Photos of people's FOs start on page 5. I mention this just so you don't have to go through all 84 (!) pages of the thread, although I fully admit that I spent WAY too much time reading them all myself! LOL
I'm going to a birthday party at the house of the recipients of my Pantas, so I'll try to remember to get a picture of the three of them wearing them, since I neglected to photograph the headbands before giving them for Christmas.
I hope that helps, Lilly!
